Roukaskass

Roukaskass is a cheerful, energetic, humorous and acrobatic African dance performance in which the history of the origin of Roukaskass is shown. Roukaskass is an Ivorian dance style that is inspired by traditional dance, but originated on the streets of the capital Abidjan after the Ivorian civil war. The influences from the West are clearly visible and so is the exodus from the villages to the city. The change in African life due to technological developments and where old traditions made way for the importance of money and luxury, are shown. The performance is a colorful spectacle full of beautiful costumes and decor in which we focus on Ivorian culture and history. Including the origin of the now so popular Afrobeat, which millions of Western people listen to. Especially in this time where TikTok videos go viral, people dance movements, but do not know the origin or origin of these. We would like to show the original African dance styles of this and share this history to make people aware of where it actually comes from. Our African dance performance is a timeline in which the history of traditional African dance to Roukaskass (Urban Ivorian dance) to the music style Afrobeats can be seen. This is made visible by means of our costumes, musical instruments, music style and the dance styles.
